War
  • The sinews of art and literature, like those of war, are money.

  • There are historic situations in which refusal to defend the inheritance of a civilization, however imperfect, against tyranny and aggression may result in consequences even worse than war.

  • The course of this conflict is not known, yet its outcome is certain. Freedom and fear, justice and cruelty, have always been at war, and we know that God is not neutral between them.

  • There are no absolute rules of conduct, either in peace or war. Everything depends on circumstances.

  • The executive has no right, in any case, to decide the question, whether there is or is not cause for declaring war.
